No action is needed from you or your customer if their card is nearing its expiry date.

How Card Updates Work with Stripe

Stripe is directly linked to the customer's bank. When the bank issues a replacement card (e.g. due to expiry), Stripe will automatically update the card details on file. This means:

  • No manual update is required by the customer or the organisation.

  • Future payments will continue uninterrupted, using the updated card.

What Happens with Refunds?

In the event of a refund, the process is handled by the bank:

  • If a replacement card exists, the refund will go to the new card.

  • If no new card is available, the refund is typically sent to the customer’s bank account.

  • If neither option is possible, Stripe will return the funds to your Stripe account and contact you via email for next steps.
