What Happens if a Customer’s Card Expires or Is About to Expire Before a Payment?

Edited

Stripe is directly linked with customers’ banks, which helps ensure smooth processing even if a customer’s card is nearing expiry or has already expired.

Automatic Card Updates

When a customer receives a new card from their bank, Stripe will automatically update the card details—no action is needed from you or the customer. This means that upcoming payments can still go through without interruption.

Refund Scenarios

If a refund is initiated and the customer’s card has expired:

  • The bank will redirect the refund to the customer’s new or replacement card, if available.

  • If the customer does not have a new card, the bank will typically send the refund directly to their bank account.

If Automatic Resolution Fails

In rare cases where the refund cannot be processed via either method, the bank will return the money to Stripe. Stripe will then contact you via email to arrange further action.
